Throughout history, we humans have been drawn
inexorably to wise maxims or aphorisms. We often refer to the sayings of
great individuals such as Confucius, King Solomon, and Jesus. Our attachment
to such things is also underlined by the hundreds of sayings propagated by
our forefathers. Without our even trying, many pop into our minds: “Don’t
cry over spilt milk,” “A rolling stone gathers no moss,” “Waste not, want
not,” and on they go…What is it about these brief, pithy statements that
grab our attention? First, we typically tend to appreciate simplicity and
most are simple and straightforward. Second, usually they express an insight
or bit of wisdom, some better way humans can behave or live. Third, they’re
easy to remember and quote. Fourth, many people have significantly improved
the quality of their lives by observing these concepts. W. Ralph Mangum has
obviously thought long and hard about the sayings in this book. Many may be
derived from personal experience through the decades, whether positive or
negative. I can honestly say that you will benefit from the study of many of
the truths of this volume. You may not agree with every single one, but now
and then you will likely smile and shake your head as a quotation zings home
to your mind and heart. And you will purpose to be a better person or a
better Christian based on insights and instructions set forth here. Reverend
Mangum covers many relevant topics and I have tried to organize them clearly
by subject for your convenience. Don’t feel as if you must complete the book
in one sitting. In fact, the book is probably better appreciated and
digested in small doses. So have it handy somewhere in the house and just
pick it up when you have a few minutes or need some extra inspiration.
